TASK 9.1: Challenges for Teachers (20 Marks)
The cartoon in Figure 9.1 presents four teachers reflecting critically on the challenges
they experience in the teaching and learning process. The teachers ask: “Do I have too
many students or am I bad at teaching?”, “Are my lesson plans the problem or is
it how I teach them?”, “Is it me or is grading just a nightmare?” and “Is my class
too hard to manage or do I just lack control?” These questions illustrate that
difficulties in learning should not automatically be viewed as deficits within learners.
Instead, teachers should consider how classroom conditions, planning, teaching
methods, assessment practices and teacher attitudes may create or reduce barriers to
learning. This perspective is consistent with South Africa's inclusive education
approach, which focuses on identifying and reducing barriers to learning and
participation.
One significant challenge represented in the cartoon is overcrowded classrooms.
Large classes make it difficult for teachers to give individual attention, monitor learner
progress and differentiate instruction. For example, a teacher with 60 or 70 learners
may not immediately notice that a learner with a visual impairment cannot read
information written on the board. Overcrowding can also increase noise, reduce
participation and make classroom management more difficult. However, the question
“Do I have too many students or am I bad at teaching?” encourages teachers to
distinguish between a structural problem and their professional response to it. Although
a teacher cannot always control class size, strategies such as cooperative learning,
peer support, small-group activities and clear classroom routines can reduce some of
the effects of overcrowding.
