Advance directives

supervision. Safety teaching should match developmental abilities rather than treating all children identically.

Newborn assessment
Normal newborn findings can include flexed posture, irregular respirations, acrocyanosis shortly after birth, transient molding, and
primitive reflexes. Concerning findings include persistent central cyanosis, severe respiratory distress, poor perfusion, or marked
lethargy.

Breastfeeding benefits
Breast milk provides age-appropriate nutrition and immune factors, supports bonding, and is associated with lower risk of some
infections. For the parent, breastfeeding can promote uterine involution and may support postpartum recovery.

Suspected abusive head trauma
Assess neurologic status, level of consciousness, pupils, seizures, respiratory pattern, vomiting, bruising, and signs of increased
intracranial pressure. Preserve evidence and follow mandated reporting requirements when abuse is suspected.
