Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) Exam
The Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) Exam is the national certification examination administered by the Academy of Lactation Policy and Practice (ALPP) that validates the clinical knowledge and counseling skills required to provide evidence-based lactation support. Passing this exam leads to the CLC credential, which is recognized as a clinical, professional lactation care provider certification . Candidates must meet eligibility requirements—including completion of an approved lactation counselor training course—before sitting for the exam. The examination consists of a didactic portion (approximately 100 multiple-choice questions) and a practical, video-based Lactation Assessment and Comprehensive Intervention Tool (LAT) assessment . The CLC certification is often a prerequisite for state licensure as a lactation counselor and is widely held by nurses, peer counselors, and maternal health professionals
