Acute Otitis Externa This is the most common outer ear infection that is usually caused by bacteria and, sometimes, fungus (McCance & Huether, 2014). Microorganisms that are frequently found are Pseudomonas, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus; and infection typically appears after prolonged exposure to moisture, hence the term swimmer’s ear (McCance & Huether, 2014).
