Endocrine System
There are 2 types of epithelial glands
- Exocrine
- Endocrine
Endocrine System can be divided into 3 different types:
- MAJOR endocrine organs eg pituitary, thyroid and parathyroid, adrenal and pineal
glands
- Main functions: are to synthesis, store and secrete hormones
- Hypothalamus is a neuroendocrine organ
Endocrine Components within other solid organs; eg, endocrine components of thymus,
pancreas, ovary, testis and kidneys
Diffuse Endocrine System eg GI and respiratory tracts with scattered hormone secreting cells
within the epithelium.
Pituitary: Master Gland
- Secrete hormones to influence other organs via stimulating and trophic factors
- is controlled by the hypothalamus via releasing hormones and nerve stimuli
Thyroid: T3, T4 and Calcitonin
Parathyroid: Parathyroid hormones (PTH)
Adrenal Glands: Aldosterone, cortisol, androgen
Pancreas: Insulin and glucagon
Ovary: Oestrogen and Progesterone
Testes: Testosterone
