Complete Final Review Guide
High-yield review across all 7 modules

7 MODULES CORE PATHWAYS FINAL REVIEW
Full-course coverage Mechanisms & comparisons Rapid recall + integration

Compact exam-focused study guide | Comparison tables | Mechanism maps | High-yield checkpoints

, How to Use This Guide

Use the module sections for focused review, then finish with the integrated comparison tables and rapid-recall checkpoints.

Recommended sequence: first master the vocabulary and cell functions, then trace mechanisms in order, and finally practice
linking innate recognition to adaptive activation and memory.

High-yield rule

For immunology questions, identify the cell or molecule, where the event occurs, what signal triggers it, and the
downstream effect. Many distractors are correct facts placed in the wrong pathway or compartment.

Module Main focus What to be able to do

1 Immune-system overview Distinguish innate vs adaptive immunity; define specificity, memory, tolerance, and clonal selection.

2 Cells, tissues & organs Match immune cells to functions and locate development/activation events in primary vs secondary
lymphoid organs.

3 Innate immunity Trace recognition, inflammation, complement, phagocytosis, NK-cell activity, cytokines, and
recruitment.

4 Antibodies & B cells Explain antibody structure/isotypes, B-cell development, activation, class switching, affinity maturation,
and effector functions.

5 TCR, MHC & antigen Compare MHC I vs II pathways, TCR recognition, processing compartments, and cross-presentation.
presentation

6 T-cell development & activation Explain thymic selection, tolerance, three-signal activation, differentiation, CTL killing, and memory.

7 Healing, hypersensitivity & Differentiate tissue-repair phases, Types I-IV hypersensitivity, and primary vs secondary immune
memory responses.

Module 1 - Introduction & Overview of the Immune System

Core concepts
• Innate immunity is rapid, germline-encoded, and responds to conserved danger or microbial patterns. It provides immediate
containment and instructs adaptive responses.
• Adaptive immunity uses highly diverse antigen receptors generated by somatic gene rearrangement. It is slower on first
exposure but produces specificity and memory.
• Humoral immunity is mediated primarily by antibodies from B-cell-derived plasma cells; cell-mediated immunity is mediated
primarily by T lymphocytes.
• Clonal selection means antigen activates lymphocytes carrying receptors with matching specificity; selected clones then
expand and differentiate.
• Self-tolerance limits responses against self antigens through deletion, anergy, suppression, receptor editing, and other
checkpoints.

Feature Innate Adaptive

Onset Minutes to hours Days during primary response

Receptors Germline-encoded PRRs Somatically generated BCRs/TCRs

Recognition Shared patterns such as PAMPs/DAMPs Specific epitopes

Memory Limited/trained features in some contexts Robust antigen-specific memory

Major cells Neutrophils, macrophages, DCs, NK cells B cells, CD4 T cells, CD8 T cells

Key bridge Dendritic cells and cytokines connect innate sensing to Adaptive effectors amplify and refine pathogen control
adaptive activation
