GOC + ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
ULTRA-PREMIUM RAPID REVISION NOTES
Source: supplied lecture transcript • Structured using the requested handwritten-study-note prompt

SOURCE-FIDELITY NOTE

• These notes reorganise the supplied lecture without silently adding outside content. Where the spoken transcript
is ambiguous or its notation needs checking, a VERIFY box is used rather than inventing a correction.

1. CARBON & BASIC REPRESENTATIONS
Carbon is the main element of this chapter. It shows tetravalency and can form four covalent bonds.
Hydrocarbons = compounds made of carbon and hydrogen.

Structural representations
Representation What the lecture explains

Chain structure Carbon atoms are shown as a chain; hydrogen completes valency.

Condensed structure The same structure is written in a shortened form.

Bond-line structure Carbon/hydrogen are not explicitly written; the carbon skeleton is shown by bonds.

Wedge-dash 3D Solid wedge = bond towards viewer; dashed line = bond away; normal bonds lie in the
plane.

2. CLASSIFICATION OF ORGANIC COMPOUNDS
• Acyclic / open-chain → open-chain compounds.
• Cyclic / closed-chain → closed-chain compounds.
• Homocyclic → ring containing the same type of ring atoms.
• Heterocyclic → a different element occurs in the ring, e.g. oxygen.
• Alicyclic → described in the lecture as same-element cyclic compounds.
• Aromatic → compounds having aromaticity; benzene is the stated example.
• Non-benzenoid → aromatic rings that are not benzene structures.

3. IUPAC NOMENCLATURE — RAPID METHOD
• Select the parent/main chain, with attention to the functional group.
• Number the carbon atoms of the main chain.
• Lecture’s simplified writing order: substituent → root word → bond → functional group.
• A separate trivial/common-name chart can be memorised for frequently used aromatic compounds.
BENZENE POSITION TERMS

• Ortho (o-) = adjacent positions.

• Meta (m-) = positions separated by one carbon.

• Para (p-) = opposite positions.

COMMON NAMES MENTIONED

• Benzene–CH■ → toluene.

• Benzene–OCH■ → anisole.

• Benzene–OH → phenol.

• Benzene–NO■ → nitrobenzene.

• The transcript says benzene–NH■ → “amine”; verify the exact trivial name from your class source.
