MSN570 WEEK 4 CASE STUDY GUIDE AND
COMPLETE SOLUTION

A 28 year old male presents with opioid dependency. He is not in

treatment at the present time,, and is exhibiting severe withdrawal

symptoms.

1. Compare and contrast the efferent and afferent nerve pathways.

Depending on the direction of the signal, neural impulses can be divided

into 2: Due to each of their function, nerve fibers that carry afferent

impulses are known as afferent nerves, or sensory nerves, and those

nerve fibers that carry efferent impulses are known as efferent nerves or

motor nerves (Gautam, 2017).

Afferent neurons- also called sensory neurons- send information about a

stimulus to the central nervous system (CNS) for further processing and

analysis (Griton & Konsman, 2018). These sensory neurons carry nerve

impulses from sensory stimuli toward the CNS and brain- like sensory

data. For example, a afferent neuron on a nerve ending will detect and

respond to excess heat.

, Efferent nerve pathways function as motor neurons carrying neural

impulses away from the CNS and towards muscles to cause movement

(Gautam, 2017). Efferent neurons send signals from the brain to the

muscles, glands and the peripheral nervous system in response to

sensory input.

2. What is nociception? Nociception is a subdivision of the

somatosensory system within the sensory nervous system; it can be

defined as the neural processes of encoding and processing

noxious stimuli (Physiopedia, 2021).Nociception involves a signal

reaching the central nervous system as an outcome of the

stimulation of unique sensory receptors in the peripheral nervous

system called nociceptors. Nociceptors are ignited by noxious

stimuli and nociception is the physiological process of the body

tissues being sheltered from damage (ScienceDirect, 2021).

Nociception is important in the "fight or flight response" and

protects us from injury. Nociceptors can be activated by three

types of stimulus; temperature (thermal), chemical (pH change
