Biology
È = electrons
chemical bonds
they are the interactions that keep atoms united in molecules or compounds. the
type of bond depends on the characteristics of the atoms involved, such as their
electronegativity, they are:
- ionic bond: normally occurs between metals, which tend to donate e- forming
cations and non-metals which tend to gain e-, forming anions. the bond occurs
due to the electrostatic force of the ions. ex: nacl.
- covalent bond: normally occurs between non-metals that share e- in an
equitable way. ex: h2o.
- coordinate covalent bond: only one of the atoms donates the e- to be shared.
ex: nh4+.
- metallic bond: normally occurs between metals that share e- in a free way,
forming an electromagnetic "cloud". ex: stainless steel.
