🧬 NSC / IEB Grade 12 Life Sciences: The Ultimate DNA & RNA Summary
🌍 1. The Big Picture
Think of DNA as the master instruction manual locked safely inside a cell's library (the nucleus).
Because the manual is too valuable to leave the room, the cell makes a cheap photocopy called
RNA to carry the instructions out to the workshop (the ribosomes) so it can actually build
proteins.

🔑 2. Core Concepts Breakdown
• DNA Structure: Shaped like a twisted ladder called a double helix.
• The Building Blocks: Made of units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide has three parts: a
phosphate group, a deoxyribose sugar, and a nitrogenous base.
• The Base-Pairing Rule: Bases are highly exclusive and only pair up one way:
- Adenine (A) pairs strictly with Thymine (T)
- Cytosine (C) pairs strictly with Guanine (G)
• RNA Differences: RNA is single-stranded, contains a ribose sugar instead of deoxyribose, and
replaces Thymine (T) with Uracil (U). (So on RNA, A pairs with U!)

⚠️ 3. Exam Traps & Common Mistakes (Marks are lost here!)
• Trap 1: Confusing Replication vs. Transcription. Replication makes an exact copy of DNA.
Transcription is making a single strand of mRNA from a DNA template. Read the question
carefully!
• Trap 2: Forgetting the Hydrogen Bonds. When describing DNA replication, you must explicitly
state that the double helix unzips because WEAK hydrogen bonds break.
• Trap 3: Writing T instead of U for RNA. RNA does not have Thymine (T). If you write a T on an
RNA strand, you get zero.

🧠 4. Memory Shortcuts (Mnemonics)
• Apple in the Tree ➔ (A pairs with T)
• Car in the Garage ➔ (C pairs with G)

📝 5. Quick Self-Test
• Q1: If a DNA strand has the sequence TAC-GGT, what will the matching mRNA strand be?
- Answer: AUG-CCA (Remember, A pairs with U on RNA!)
• Q2: Where in the cell does translation take place?
- Answer: At the Ribosomes in the cytoplasm.
• Q3: What type of bond holds nitrogenous bases together in a DNA molecule?
- Answer: Weak hydrogen bonds.
