Beyond the Vlogs: A Critical Analysis of Emma
Chamberlain, Self-Presentation and Authenticity

Throughout the expansion of the creator economy, forms of digital production have

continued to evolve; from curated content to an emphasis on authenticity, the new media

landscape is ever-evolving. Consequently, central to this critical analysis is the term

authenticity, which refers to the perceived genuineness of individuals (Beverland and

Farrelly, 2010). However, encoding authenticity online is embedded in a paradox when

examined through audience research theorisations of the self. Accordingly, through an

audience research lens, this case study analysis aims to critically assess the contradictions

inherent in the communication practices of content creator Emma Chamberlain. By doing so,

it endeavours to contribute valuable insights for interpreting how authenticity is curated,

perceived and negotiated in the digital economy.

With over 12 million YouTube subscribers (Social Blade, 2024), Emma Chamberlain is a

social media personality whose mainstream popularity among young females is symbiotic

with her unfiltered and accessible persona. Significantly, Chamberlain’s cultural production

is noteworthy as she contradicts established norms in the lifestyle genre by encoding

imperfections and everyday realism. In doing so, Chamberlain has exerted considerable

influence in the lifestyle genre by advancing a paradigm shift in the expression of authenticity

(Bromwich, 2019). Albeit, with increased online visibility, the discourse surrounding

Chamberlain’s authenticity has become subject to scrutiny.

, Accordingly, Chamberlain presents a pertinent case study in audience research for critically

evaluating how audiences decode authenticity or its perceived absence. Although extensive

research has examined how creators stage authenticity (Duffy, 2013; Abidin, 2017) and craft

polysemic messages (Papacharissi, 2012), few studies have appraised how audiences interpret

their technical strategies and appropriation of platform affordances. Thus, this analysis

intends to address gaps in prior literature by critically assessing the interpretations of

Chamberlain’s self-presentation.

Considering this, it is important to emphasise that the field of audience research has

witnessed significant transformations due to increased opportunities for participation,

feedback and interaction (Livingstone, 2012). Accordingly, this shift has developed a

participatory paradigm that is increasingly valuable for interpreting how audiences may shape

and resist online self-representations. For this reason, scholars must continue to re-evaluate

established theorisations to accurately assess the evolving conditions of active audiences.

Consequently, the following examination will evaluate traditional audience research

frameworks, notably Hall’s (1973) encoding-to-decoding model, to determine their ongoing

applicability to Chamberlain’s production and circulation of mediated authenticity.

Much of Chamberlain’s storytelling techniques document mundane daily tasks and backstage

behaviours (Goffman, 1959) to reify intimacy and dismantle the hierarchical encoder-to-

decoder binary (Hall, 1973). To illustrate, Chamberlain’s YouTube vlog titled “What my life

is really like…” (Chamberlain, 2020) begins with an extreme close-up of Chamberlain

removing her braces and simultaneously introducing the video sponsor. The twenty-minute

vlog entry proceeds to narrate spontaneous moments in her morning routine, situated within

intimate and personal settings. With this beginning, Chamberlain fulfils multiple objectives:
