NSC FINAL STUDY GUIDE.FINAL TEST 2026\2027.
Gas Turbine Engines Pros/Cons
Advantages: High power-to-weight ratio, efficient at high speeds, fuel economy
Disadvantages: Lots of air req., loud noise, diffucult repairs
Gas Turbine Engine Structre
1) Compressor - Draws Air and compresses
2) Combustion Chamber - Pumped fuel ignites with compressed air
3) Turbine - Hot Gases converted to work
Air Intake -> Compression -> Combustion-> Turbine(work) -> Exhasut
Support Systems: Air system/fuel system/ lubrication system

Fission
Definition: The process in which a heavy atom absorbs a neutron, and the nucleus
splits into two smaller nuclei, releasing energy and additional neutrons.
1 - Nucleus absorbs nuetron
2- Neutron to proton ratio increases, energy per nucleon decreases
3 - less tightly bound nuetron undergo decay to reach stability = energy release.
Moderator
Definition: a medium that reduces the speed of (FAST) neutrons, making them
thermal(SLOW) neutrons, to sustain a nuclear reaction
Common moderators: Water(US NAVY), Graphite
Qualities of a good moderator
, NSC FINAL STUDY GUIDE.FINAL TEST 2026\2027.
1) High microscopic cross-section (scattering)
2) Low microscopical cross-section (absorption)
3) Atomic mass close to neutron (i.e.. Hydrogen)
Pascals Principle
Definition: a fluid at rest in a closed container, a pressure change in one part is
transmitted without loss to every portion of the fluid and to the walls of the container
Hydraulic Stystems
Definition: A hydraulic system uses an incompressible fluid to transmit force from
one point to another; applying pressure to a confined fluid creates an equal increase
in pressure throughout the system, allowing a small force on a small piston to
produce a larger force on a larger piston.
Usages:
- Steering/control systems
- Deck machinery
- Masts/Antennae on submarines
- Weapon systems
- Elevators
Common Fluid - Oil -> Non corrosive, Lubricant, already on board
Ship Board Electrical Theory
Electromagnetic Force(EV): Force causes electrons to move from one location to another
Current(I): Flow of electrons through conductor or circuit per increment of time
Resistance: an electrical circuits opposition to the flow of current through it
Power: a rate at which work is perfomed
3 Phase AC power
Phases: an individual alternating current (AC) signal, which is a sinusoidal waveform
AC power
Induction Motor(3phase) Components:
1) Magnetic Field
