Metal and Metallurgical Process
Metal
Properties of Metal
1. Metals are hard in nature.
2. Metals are good conductors of heat and electricity.
3. Metals are malleable, ductile and having luster property.
4. Metals are electropositive in nature.
5. Metal forms cation by losing valence electron.
6. Metals have tenacity.
Difference between Metal and Non- metal
Metal Non-metal
1. Metals are those elements Non-metals are those elements
which loses valence electron wchich accept electron.e.g ,N2
from valence shell. Cl2 ,C, etc
Na,Mg,Al etc
2. Metal forms cation by losing Non-metals form atoms by
valence shell electron. Hence, gaining electron. Hence, they
metals are electropositive in are electronegative in nature.
nature.
3. Metals are generally hard. Non-metals are soft except
Diamond.
4. Metals are solid at room Non-metal exist in three state.
temperature except Mercury. C-(s), Br-(l) and O-(g)
5. Metals are good conductor Non-metals are poor conductor
of heat and electricity. of heat and electricity except
Graphite.
, 6. Metals show tensile Non-metals do not show
property. tensile property.
7. Metals are malleable and Non-metals aren’t malleable
ductile. and ductile.
8. Metals have low Non- metals have high
electronegativity value. electronegativity value.
Metalloids
Metalloids are those elements which have dual property of
metal and non-metal.
Eg: As, Ge, Sb, Tc, Po,etc
Metalloids are used in the preparation of super conductor.
Metallurgy
The process of extracting metals from their ores
economically and conveniently is known as metallurgy. There
are different types of metallurgical process.
Hydrometallurgy
The metallurgical process in which metals are
extracted from their ores by dissolving in suitable solvents
and followed by crystallization and precipitation process is
known as hydrometallurgy. Silver can be extracted by this
method.
Electrometallurgy
The metallurgy process in which metals are extracted
from their ore by electrolysis of metal is known as
electrometallurgy. Sodium, Calcium, Magnesium,
Potassium are extracted by this method.
Pyrometallurgy
