This complete exam guide covers evolutionary biology topics including natural selection, adaptation, genetic drift, gene flow, mutation, population genetics, Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium, speciation, phylogenetics, and macroevolution. It includes worked examples, quick checks, explanations of key concepts, and 70 practice questions with answers for exam preparation. Topics: Mechanisms of Evolution & The 4 Evolutionary Forces: Clear, comparative breakdowns of Natural Selection, Genetic Drift, Gene Flow, and Mutation. Learn how these forces interact simultaneously, when drift overpowers selection in small populations, and how to spot common examiner traps. Selection Dynamics & Fitness: Detailed explanations of Directional, Stabilizing, and Disruptive selection. Demystifies relative fitness, adaptation vs. spandrels, exaptation, and how to avoid the "adaptationism" trap on free-response questions. Population Genetics & Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium: A complete guide to the null model. Includes the 5 essential HW conditions, genotype equations (p^2 + 2pq + q^2 = 1), and step-by-step worked calculations for carrier frequencies (2pq) using recessive phenotypes (q^2). Macroevolution & Adaptive Radiations: Explores island biogeography, founder effects, convergent evolution, key innovations, and how microevolutionary allele changes accumulate into macroevolutionary patterns over geological time. .. and more! Who This Is For: Designed for undergraduate students taking introductory to advanced college-level Evolutionary Biology, Population Genetics, or General Biology II courses looking for an all-in-one revision tool.

The Complete Exam Survival Guide ()

Selection, adaptation, population genetics, speciation, phylogenetics and macroevolution

Topic walkthroughs, worked examples, quick checks, and 70 practice questions with answers

Start here. This guide is built the way you would structure revision: each topic is explained

in plain language first, then pinned down with the exact terms your exam will test, then

pressure-tested with practice questions. You do not need to read it front to back. Jump to

the unit you are weak on, read the walkthrough, do the quick checks as you go, and finish

with the question bank at the end. Everything connects, so cross-references are noted

where they help.

,What evolution actually is (and is not)

Evolution is change in the heritable characteristics of populations across generations.

Read that sentence slowly, because two words in it are where most exam mistakes

happen: heritable and populations.

Heritable means the change has to be passed on through genes. A bodybuilder's

muscles are not heritable, so they are not evolution. A mutation that changes wing shape

is heritable, so it can be.

Populations means the thing that evolves is the group, not the individual. An individual's

genotype is fixed at conception and never changes. What changes over time is the mix of

alleles in the whole population. This is why we say individuals are selected but populations

evolve.

Quick check. A weightlifter builds huge muscles over ten years. Is that evolution?

→ No. The change is not heritable, and a single individual cannot evolve. Evolution is a

change in allele frequencies across a population over generations.

, The four forces that change populations

Almost every exam question about mechanism comes down to identifying which of four

forces is acting. Learn to tell them apart and you can answer a huge fraction of the paper.

Natural selection: differential survival and reproduction based on heritable variation. It is

the only force that reliably builds adaptation, because it is the only one that is non-

random with respect to fitness. Selection has direction: it consistently favors whatever

works.

Genetic drift: random change in allele frequencies from pure chance in who happens to

reproduce. Drift has no direction and no goal. Its power depends on population size: tiny in

huge populations, enormous in small ones.

Gene flow: alleles moving between populations through migration and interbreeding.

Gene flow blurs differences between populations and can erase divergence that selection

or drift was building.

Mutation: the ultimate source of all new variation. Rates are low per gene per generation,

so mutation alone changes frequencies slowly, but nothing else can act without it.

Selection cannot favor a variant that mutation never produced.

How they interact

These forces do not take turns; they act at the same time and often pull against each

other. Selection may push a population one way while gene flow from a neighboring

population pulls it back. Drift may fix a mildly harmful allele that weak selection could not

remove. A good answer names all the relevant forces and says which one dominates and

why.

T R A P When a small population loses a trait, do not automatically say selection. In

small populations drift can fix or lose alleles regardless of whether they help. Ask
