Unit 2 Assignment D- Personal review
Unit 2 personal review
Introduction
After completing unit 2 I gained new skills as well as developed skills I already had. I
carried out colourimetry, calorimetry, titrations and chromatography. This helped me
develop existing skills as well as gaining new ones. As well as scientific skills such as
calibrating equipment, I also developed general skills that will help me in the future such
as working independently. In the past (at GCSE and A level) I had always completed
practicals in a group which was good at developing my teamwork skills. However, I lacked
the skills to carry out practicals independently. This will help me in the future when I am
employed as there will be times when I will need to carry out tasks independently. I now
find it easy to work alone and can do it efficiently. I have also improved when it comes to
meeting deadlines. In the past my only coursework subject was when I was doing my
GCSE’s, and I struggled to meet deadlines. However, in unit 2, I submitted my work on time
and have managed my time better. Time management skills are very important for when I
go to university and in the future when I have a job. They are always useful in managing
everyday tasks and completing this efficiently to a high quality. I have also improved my
practical skills in general as all my practicals ended up being successful and I didn’t have
any anomalies in any of my practicals.

Skills I already had when I Skills I gained after Skills I could develop in
started the course completing unit 2 the future
Measuring masses Measuring masses to 3 If I was working as a
decimal places and scientist, I’d Increase
calibrating to gain better accuracy by using more
accuracy scientific mass balances
that consider wind and
other factors to gain a more
accurate mass
Measuring pH with indicator Using a pH probe to Clamping the pH probe and
for titrations measure pH using a magnetic stirrer so
that the solution is properly
mixed and I can focus on
just getting an accurate
reading and not
multitasking
Titrations Accurately reading a I would add contents of the
burette burette more gradually as it
took me many attempts to
get three concordant
results. I need to work on
having better control over
the tap through practice
Colorimetry I had done colorimetry I would do repeats in order
before, however now I know to find a mean and achieve
how to find the absorbance a more accurate result and
of different dilutions of a this way I'd be able to
solution. discount anomalies
Making a standard solution I had no previous I would use a more
experience of making a accurate balance, for
standard solution, but I am example an analytical
now able to after unit 2 balance to make sure the
mass is as accurate as I can
possibly get it to get a more
accurate concentration.
Making dilutions I didn’t have experience I would make the solution
making different dilutions of at controlled temperature
a solution previously (e.g. 20°C) because as we
however now I can do it learned previously in class,
