Woolworths South Africa: Environmental Responsibility, Sustainable Development
Goals and Water Stewardship

Introduction

Environmental sustainability has become an essential consideration for modern

organisations because business activities depend heavily on natural resources while

simultaneously contributing to environmental pressures. Large retailers such as

Woolworths South Africa have environmental impacts that extend beyond their physical

stores to distribution centres, transportation activities, agricultural production,

manufacturing facilities and suppliers. Consequently, environmental responsibility

requires an organisation to consider the complete value chain rather than concentrating

only on the environmental performance of its own premises. Woolworths has

incorporated sustainability into its broader business strategy through its Good Business

Journey, which addresses key areas such as energy and climate change, water,

sustainable farming, ethical sourcing, packaging and waste, and social development

(Woolworths Holdings, 2026a). These initiatives are also aligned with the United Nations

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which provide an international framework for

addressing environmental, social and economic challenges (United Nations, 2015).

Woolworths' approach to energy management and water stewardship can therefore be

examined in terms of how effectively the organisation is reducing its environmental

footprint while contributing to wider sustainable-development objectives.

Question 1: Analyse how Woolworths is using energy responsibly and efficiently to
reduce its environmental impact [10 marks]

Energy is a particularly important environmental issue for Woolworths because retail

operations require considerable amounts of electricity. Stores require energy for

, refrigeration, lighting, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning systems, information

technology and other operational activities. Woolworths has consequently developed an

Energy and Climate Change programme that seeks to improve energy efficiency while

simultaneously reducing greenhouse-gas emissions and increasing the use of renewable

energy. This indicates that the organisation approaches energy management as both an

operational and environmental responsibility rather than simply as a means of reducing

expenditure (Woolworths Holdings, 2026b).

A significant component of Woolworths' strategy involves improving the efficiency of its

existing infrastructure. The organisation has introduced technologies such as LED

lighting, improved refrigeration systems, refrigerator doors and online electricity

monitoring. These measures can reduce the quantity of electricity required to operate

individual stores and facilities (Woolworths Holdings, 2026b). LED lighting, for example,

provides an opportunity to achieve the required level of illumination while consuming

less electricity than conventional lighting systems. Similarly, refrigerator doors can

reduce the amount of cooled air escaping from refrigeration units, thereby reducing the

energy required to maintain appropriate temperatures. Such interventions are

particularly relevant to a food retailer because refrigeration is an important part of

maintaining product quality and food safety.

The use of online electricity metering is another important aspect of responsible

energy management. Energy efficiency cannot be managed effectively without reliable

information concerning consumption. Through monitoring electricity use, Woolworths

can identify areas of unusually high consumption, assess whether efficiency

interventions are producing the desired results and make informed decisions about

future investments (Woolworths Holdings, 2026b). This creates an approach based on

measurement and continuous improvement rather than relying on assumptions about

energy performance.
