Absorbent Material material which can take up chemicals and hold them. Sometimes used to clean up
pesticide spills. Ex) clay powder, kitty litter

Absorption The movement of a substance into an organism (plant, animal) or a structure (soil,
wood, etc.) when placed on its surface

Activated Charcoal A finely ground form of charcoal used to absorb gases and vapours in cartridge
respirators

Active Ingredients (a.i) The part of a pesticide formulation that controls the pest

Acute Toxicity An adverse effect resulting from a single dose or exposure to a pesticide. This effect
is determined through oral, dermal or inhalation studies

Adjuvant A substance added to a pesticide to improve the effectiveness of the active
ingredient. Ex) emulsifiers, wetting agents, surfactants

Adverse Effect A harmful response causing impairment, injury, damage or death

Action Threshold The point at which treatment should take place in order to prevent the pest
population from causing unacceptable damage

Adsorption The process of a substance binding to soil particles

Aerosol A pesticide driven from its container by a gas under pressure producing very fine
solid or liquid particles suspended in the air

Agitation The constant movement of a liquid pesticide in order to keep the contents mixed

Anti Back-Flow Device A valve designed to prevent the reverse flow of water and chemical towards the
water source in the event of a hose rupture or sudden loss of suction by the pump.
Sometimes referred to a check or foot valve

Antidote A remedy given by a doctor to counteract the effects of a poison

Application Rate (Pesticide Rate) The amount of pesticide applied in a given area (e.g 2 L per hectare). The pesticide
rate is on the label

Artificial Respiration First aid method to establish and maintain breathing

, Core Manual Ontario Pesticide Training And Certification

Atropine An antidote drug administered to a person poisoned by organophophorous and
carbamate insecticides

Attractants Substances which may attract female insects for egg laying or attract male insects
to an artificial trap

Back-Flow The reverse flow of water and chemical towards the water source resulting from a
hose rupture or sudden loss of suction by the pump

Bacteria One-celled organism that can only be seen with a microscope

Bactericide A pesticide used to control or kill bacteria

Beneficial Organisms Natural enemies that may feed on the pest and help reduce the pest population

Bioaccumulation The ability of some chemicals to build up in the body tissues (especially fat cells) of
animals. Small amounts of the chemical gradually build up over time and can cause
death or long-term damage

Biological Control The use of living things such as birds or insects to control pests

Biomagnification The ability of some chemicals to accumulate in animals that are part of a food chain.
The last animal in the food chain receives very high levels of the chemical which
may cause death or long-term damage

Biopesticide Active ingredients that are biopesticides that are appropriate for cosmic purposes
are listed in the document "list of Active Ingredients Authorized for Cosmetic uses
(allowable list)"

Buffer Zone An area that is left untreated between the target site and a sensitive area

Calibration The test measurement of application equipment output under typical operating
conditions

Canister A metal or plastic container filled with absorbent materials. It is designed to filter
gases and vapours from the air. The canister may also contain a physical filter to
remove solid or liquid particles

Carrier Material added to a pesticide product to produce uniform distribution. The carrier is
usually water but it may also be talc 9dust), oil or other solvents

Cartridge The small, detachable part of the air-purifying respirator designed to absorb gases
