A professional code of ethics can guide behavior by both setting an example for employees, as
well as serving as a reference for correcting violations of the code (AMC, 2018). One way they
can benefit a profession is by pledging to do no harm; This not only will help fellow employees,
but also society at large because it makes employees more aware of their responsibilities and
how their professional actions can affect others. Another way a professional code of ethics can
benefit a profession is by encouraging honesty and integrity. When consumers know that a
company has a reputation for being honest, they will be far more likely to trust that company
with their business and personal data.

Contributing to society and human well-being is a large part of my volunteer OSINT work. As
an OSINT practitioner who works to find missing people, I do my best to improve the quality of
life for both the missing person and their families, as well as trying to minimize the negative
effects of social media (such as data collection) by using that information for good. One of the
ways I practice this ethical principle in my work is by volunteering with TraceLabs to find
missing children, and by writing my own OSINT reports to help newer members learn the
process.
