4.2 Developmental Challenges & Deviations
College 1
Why study early childhood?
● Increasing attention for diagnostics and treatment of early psychopathology
● Many emotional and behavioral problems in middle childhood and adolescence originate from early
childhood
● Early childhood is characterized by rapid changes and developmental challenges, which are crucial for
understanding developmental deviations
● Project 1: attachment and initiative
● Project 2: temperament, regulation and control
● Project 3: socialization and identity
● Project 4: rhythm and routine
Temper tantrum
Discrete episodes of excessive temper, frustration or upset manifested by
shouting, crying, stamping and/or violence or attempts at damage
directed against self, other or property
● Normaal ontwikkelingsverschijnsel
autonomie willen/zelfsturing
● Terrible two: piek in dit soort gedragingen
Until recently: preschool psychopathology was considered to be developmentally transient. However:
● Evidence of persistence of preschool psychopathology into middle childhood
● Preschoolers meeting diagnostic criteria are impaired according to parent and teacher report
● Preschoolers with disruptive behavior disorder are responsive to interventions
Normative misbehavior or disruptive behavior?
● Frequency: hitting is common but not frequent
● Predictable developmental progression: stably high rates of aggression are not normative
● Distinct forms: reactive vs. proactive aggression
● Quality differences: temper tantrums vary in
○ Duration (max 5 min is ‘normaal’)
○ Modulation
- Easily elicited
- Intensity of anger expression
- Destructivity
- Difficulty recovering
Meet the young child
● Infancy: 0-12 months
● Toddlerhood: 12-30 months
● Preschool: 30-48 months
Developmental milestones: a set of goals or markers that a child is expected to achieve during maturation
1
,Motor development infancy (0-12 months)
● 0-3 maanden: hoofd staat centraal →
lippen, zuigreflex, volgen met ogen
● Romp: hoofdbalans, stabiliteit
● Armen: handen verkennen
● 3e kwartaal: zitten, kruipen
● Tegen eerste jaar: meer verticaal →
staan, optrekken, lopen
Language development infacy (0-12
months)
1) Kirren/cooing → aaaa, oooo (lange klanken)
2) Vocal play: ka, ba, le, ma
3) Canonical babbling: ma-ma-ma-ma → ah-ma-ba-ba
4) Conversational babbling: ajaa, bamla dada?
Motor development toddlerhood (12-30 months)
● Loopt goed: rond 13.8 maanden
Language development toddlerhood (12-30 months)
Vocabulary spurt: sudden spurt in vocabulary growth after initial slow rate of word
acquisition
⇒ Explanations
Motor development preschool (30-48 months)
Sleutelleeftijden fijne motoriek
● 1 jaar: pincetgreep
● 2 ½ jaar: houdt potlood vast met vingers
● 3 jaar: houdt pen op volwassen wijze vast
● 4 jaar: kleurt binnen de lijntjes
2
, Language development preschool (30-48 months)
● Eerst heel fact-based: what, where, who?
● Daarna explanation-based: how, why, when?
Seeking causal explanations
● What, where, who, prior to how, why, when?
● Fact-based questions are more frequent, but explanation-based questions
increase with age
● Young children are motivated to seek causal information actively
follow-up vraag stellen
bedenken
