Quality Auditing
Quality assurance and quality control are distinct but complementary job functions. Quality
assurance is proactive and process-oriented. It’s focused on preventing defects by ensuring that
standards and methods are correctly defined before and during execution. Quality control is
reactive and output-oriented. It identifies defects in specific deliverables after they are produced.
For the NGS platform, quality assurance encompassed the calibration standards, latency
benchmarks, and RFID accuracy specifications established before stadium installations began.
Quality control encompassed the physical testing and inspection activities that verified each
stadium’s compliance against those standards. Combining the two leads to heavy investment in
inspection without addressing root-cause process failures, leading to repeated rework.
Several quality control techniques were executed during NGS control. Site validation audits at all
30 stadiums involved signal propagation testing, antenna coverage mapping, and latency
verification against the sub-100-millisecond delivery standard (Amazon Web Services, 2020).
Continuous data accuracy benchmarking compared RFID tracking output against video review
samples throughout deployment. It was a statistical process control approach that detects
assignable causes of variance before they compound across derived metrics like route grades and
win probability models (Larson and Gray, 2018). The 2014 preseason pilot served as a system-
level quality audit, validating the full end-to-end workflow under live-game conditions before
the league-wide rollout. This was consistent with a stage-gate model requiring deliverables to
clear quality thresholds before advancing (Larson and Gray, 2018). The primary quality
