Mathematics
Definition
Mathematics is a branch of knowledge that deals with the study of numbers,
quantities, shapes, patterns, structures, measurements, and logical
relationships. It uses symbols, formulas, rules, and logical reasoning to solve
problems and understand relationships between different quantities.

Mathematics helps us perform calculations, measure objects, analyze data,
understand patterns, and solve both theoretical and practical problems. It is used in
many fields, including science, engineering, medicine, economics, computer
science, architecture, and everyday life.

Main Branches of Mathematics

1. Arithmetic – deals with numbers and basic operations such as addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division.
2. Algebra – deals with variables, equations, and mathematical
relationships.
3. Geometry – studies shapes, sizes, angles, lines, and spaces.
4. Trigonometry – studies the relationships between angles and sides of
triangles.
5. Calculus – studies change, motion, limits, derivatives, and integration.
6. Statistics – deals with collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and presenting
data.
7. Probability – studies the likelihood or chance of events occurring.

Chapter 1:
Matrices
For the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Class 9 Mathematics curriculum, Unit 1 covers matrices,
including their introduction, types, addition/subtraction, and multiplication.

1. What is a Matrix?
A matrix is a rectangular arrangement of numbers or other mathematical quantities in rows and
columns, usually enclosed in brackets.

For example:

[
A=
\begin{bmatrix}
2 & 5\
1&3
\end{bmatrix}
]

Here, 2, 5, 1, and 3 are called the elements (or entries) of the matrix.

 First row: (2,\ 5)
 Second row: (1,\ 3)
 First column: (2,\ 1)
 Second column: (5,\ 3)

Matrices are generally represented by capital letters such as (A, B, C).

2. Rows and Columns
A row runs horizontally from left to right.

A column runs vertically from top to bottom.
