Chalk Lines
A spool of string lined with chalk powder stretched and snapped, leaving a clear, coloured line.
Different colours may be used for specific kinds of utilities (e.G., blue for water, crimson for
electrical).

Connecting Cables
The hyperlink between the transmitter and the receiver.

Detectable Tape
Also called underground caution tape. Brightly colored plastic tape this is usually hooked up
above underground utilities composed of non-conductive substances. Serves as a warning if
someone starts digging close to the utility.

Direct Connection
Way that transmitter signals can be despatched, via connecting directly to utility line. Circuit is
finished with grounding rod connected to transmitter.
Electrical Noise
Unwanted indicators that disrupt transmission of software region; can be because of energy
strains or transformers.
Electromagnetic (EM) Locators
The most used equipment in application detection. Operate via sending a sign through utilities,
and receiver detects it, permitting operator to trace route of the line. Primarily used for metallic
pipe and cable detection.
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)
Works via releasing radar waves into the ground and surveying reflections from underground
items.
