ECS3701 ASSIGNMENT 4 2026

DUE 26 AUGUST 2026

The School as a Socialisation Agent and Creator of the Social Self

The school is one of the most important institutions in society. It is not only a place
where children learn reading, writing and mathematics, but also a place where they
learn how to behave and interact with others. In this way, the school helps shape a
person’s social self, which is the sense of who we are that develops through our
relationships and interactions with other people (Study Guide, Learning Unit 8). As an
organisation, the school has a clear structure that includes teachers, principals, rules,
timetables and curricula. These structures guide learners and influence how they
behave and learn. Institutions such as schools are important because they help
organise society and create stability (Mishkin, 2016, Chapter 8). The role of the school
in developing the social self can be understood through three main sociological
perspectives: functionalism, conflict theory and symbolic interactionism. Each
perspective provides a different view of how schools influence individuals and society
(Mishkin, 2016, Chapter 8).

, 2. The Various Functions of the School

The school has many functions. Some are intentional and obvious, while others are
hidden and not always recognised (Study Guide, Learning Unit 8).

2.1 Manifest Functions

Manifest functions are the intended and visible purposes of schooling. The most
obvious function is to teach children basic skills like reading, writing, and mathematics.
The school also teaches children social skills and values. Learners learn to respect
authority, to be punctual, and to work hard. They also learn about their country's history
and culture, which helps create a sense of shared identity. Another important manifest
function is social placement. Schools sort Learners according to their abilities and
channel them into different educational and career paths (Mishkin, 2016, Chapter 8).

2.2 Latent Functions

Latent functions are the hidden or unintended purposes of schooling. Schools provide
childcare while parents are at work. They help young people form friendships and social
networks. Learners learn to work in groups and to get along with people from different
backgrounds. These latent functions shape Learners' social skills and help them
develop relationships that can benefit them later in life (Study Guide, Learning Unit 8).

2.3 The School and Social Control

The school also plays a role in social control. It teaches Learners to obey rules and
respect authority. This prepares them for life in the workplace and in society more
broadly. This helps maintain order and stability in society (Mishkin, 2016, Chapter 8).
