A diary entry is a form of recount in which the writer explains what has happened
to them.
Here's a checklist of the key features to use when you write a diary entry.
Start with 'Dear Diary’.
Describe the places where the events happened.
Write in the past tense.
Use pronouns like I, my and me to show that the events happened to you.
Talk about how you were feeling or what you were thinking when each event
happened.
Use interesting vocabulary.
Dear Diary,
today has been a really fun day! My mum took my brother
and me to the zoo. We left very early this morning, so that
we could be there when they opened at 9 o’clock. I was so
excited, you can’t even imagine!
After we looked at the fish, Mum bought us some ice
cream. I got chocolate and strawberry. These are my
favourite flavours! We then went to the Zebras while
eating our ice cream and when I stood in front of the
fence, one of them stole my ice cream cone. Can you
belive that? At first I was really upset, because I wanted to
eat it myself, but then I also got a little bit scared because I
didn’t know if Zebras are allowed to eat ice cream. Then we
went home because we had seen everything and my
brother was bored.
I hope we can do something fun like this again soon!
I will write again tomorrow. See you,
Anne
