On October 22, 2014, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau shot and killed Corporal
Nathan Cirillo, a Canadian soldier on ceremonial guard duty at the
Canadian National War Memorial. Zehaf-Bibeau then entered the
Centre Block of the Canadian Parliament and engaged in a shootout
with security personnel. He was shot by the Parliamentary Sergeant-
at-Arms, Kevin Vickers, and died at the scene. After the incident, it
was discovered that Zehaf-Bibeau had left a video describing his
motives, focusing on Canada’s foreign policy in the Middle East.
Further investigation brought to light other information about Zehaf-
Bibeau, including his struggles with drugs, the law, and mental
illness.

Two years prior to the Parliament Hill shootings, Malala Yousafzai, a
young girl living in the Swat Valley of Pakistan, had been advocating
for the education of girls, in defiance of local Taliban leaders who
banned girls from attending school and even attacked some girls’
schools. She gave speeches, wrote a blog for the BBC, and was the
subject of a documentary by the New York Times. She was awarded the
first National Peace Prize of Pakistan in 2011.

Then, in October 2012, when Malala was 15 years old, a Taliban
gunman shot her point-blank in the head right after she boarded a
bus to return home after school. She survived the assassination
attempt and received extensive medical treatment in England. She

, was unable to return to Pakistan because the Taliban made clear that
it still planned to kill her. She currently is living in exile with her
family.

Despite these considerable obstacles, Malala remains undeterred
from her main goal. She has continued to advocate for children’s
education in general and for girls’ education in particular. She has
given speeches to the United Nations, wrote a best-selling
autobiography, and was the subject of a major 2015 documentary.
Two million people signed a right-to-education petition started in her
honor. She now heads the Malala Fund (www.malala.org), which
works to support the education and empowerment of girls
throughout the world.
