DUE DATE: AUGUST 2026

QUESTION 1:

Societal Impacts of Agricultural Technology

Economic Impacts

Agricultural technology has significantly influenced the economic performance of South
African agriculture by improving productivity, reducing production costs and supporting
more efficient resource management. Technologies such as precision farming, GPS-guided
machinery, drones, automated irrigation systems and digital monitoring allow farmers to
make more accurate decisions about the use of water, fertiliser, pesticides and other inputs.
Precision agriculture, for example, enables farmers to apply inputs according to the specific
requirements of different areas of a field, potentially reducing wastage while improving
yields and profitability (Jacobs, Van Tol & Du Preez, 2018). This is particularly important in
South Africa, where farmers face high input costs, water scarcity and variable climatic
conditions.

A real-world example is the adoption of precision drone spraying in KwaZulu-Natal, where
agricultural cooperatives and farmers have used drones to apply agricultural chemicals more
precisely. The technology can reduce chemical wastage, improve operational efficiency and
lower some production costs, demonstrating how technological innovation can contribute to
the economic sustainability of agricultural enterprises (GreenCape, 2025). However, the
economic benefits of agricultural technology are not equally accessible. The high cost of
purchasing equipment, limited access to finance, poor infrastructure and insufficient
technical skills can prevent smallholder farmers from adopting advanced technologies
(Bontsa et al., 2023). Therefore, while agricultural technology can increase competitiveness
and profitability, it may also widen the economic gap between well-resourced commercial
farmers and smaller producers.
