Grade 10 Mathematics Study Guide: ProbabilityMaster the core concepts of uncertainty and random phenomena with this comprehensive study guide designed for Grade 10 Mathematics. From foundational probability scales and set theory rules to advanced visual tools and a complete practice exam with a full memorandum, this resource equips learners with the calculation fluency required for examination success. Guide Overview & StructureThe guide is organized into seven core chapters, followed by a summary of key formulae, common mistakes to avoid, and a final revision checklist:Chapter 1: Fundamental Concepts & Terminology — Explores the probability scale from 0 to 1, core definitions (experiment, trial, outcome, sample space $S$, event $E$, empty set), and the three core axioms of probability. Chapter 2: Calculating Probabilities — Contrasts theoretical probability ($P(E) = n(E) div n(S)$) for equally likely outcomes with experimental probability (relative frequency $f_{rel} = f div n$) and the Law of Large Numbers. Chapter 3: Set Theory & Probability Rules — Connects set operations to probability rules, covering complementary events ($P(A') = 1 - P(A)$), mutually exclusive events ($P(A cap B) = 0$), the General Addition Rule ($P(A cup B) = P(A) + P(B) - P(A cap B)$), and exhaustive events. Chapter 4: Visual Tools & Analytical Techniques — Details three vital visual frameworks: two-set Venn diagrams (with a 5-step problem-solving protocol), two-way contingency tables, and tree diagrams for sequential trials (distinguishing between with replacement and without replacement scenarios). Chapter 5: Worked Examples — Walks through multi-step problem types, including solving for an unknown $x$ in a Venn diagram, analyzing contingency tables, and constructing a tree diagram for dependent sequential draws. Chapter 6: Comprehensive Practice Examination — A complete 60-minute, 50-mark practice paper spanning single-event calculations, probability rules, Venn diagrams, contingency tables, and tree diagrams. Chapter 7: Full Memorandum & Detailed Solutions — Complete step-by-step solutions with mark allocations, error analysis, and formal reasoning checks (such as proving mutual exclusivity). Key Features & HighlightsSystematic Visual Protocols: Emphasizes step-by-step methods for Venn diagrams—such as always starting from the innermost intersection and working outward—to prevent cascading calculation errors. Without-Replacement Guidance: Clearly explains how denominator and numerator values shift in sequential selection tasks depending on whether items are replaced. Built-In Answer Checkers: Uses probability axioms as self-checks (verifying that $0 le P(E) le 1$ and that all leaf probabilities in a tree diagram sum to $1.0$). Exam Readiness Tools: Includes a quick-reference formula summary card, a list of common student pitfalls to avoid, and a structured revision checklist

Fundamental Concepts &
Terminology
Probability is the branch of mathematics that measures how likely an
event is to occur. Every probability value lives on a scale from 0
(impossible — the event can never happen) to 1 (certain — the event always
happens). A probability of 0.5 means the event has an even chance of
occurring or not occurring. Understanding this scale is your starting point
for everything else in probability.

The Probability Scale

Use this scale as a mental anchor whenever you calculate a probability. If your answer comes out less than 0 or greater
than 1, you have made an error and should recheck your working. Decimals, fractions, and percentages are all acceptable
ways to express a probability — just be consistent within a question.

Core Terminology
Before tackling any probability problem, make sure you know these six key terms precisely. Mixing them up is one of the
most common sources of mistakes in examinations.

Experiment
A planned process involving uncertainty that produces observable data. Examples: tossing two coins, rolling a
die, drawing a card from a deck.

Trial
A single execution of the experiment. If you roll a die five times, each individual roll is one trial.

Outcome
One individual result obtained from a single trial. Rolling a 4 on a die is a single outcome.

Sample Space S
The complete set of all possible outcomes. The total count of outcomes is written n(S). For a standard die, S =
{1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6} and n(S) = 6.

Event E
Any subset of the sample space. The count of outcomes that favour event E is written n(E). "Rolling an even
number" is an event with n(E) = 3.

Empty Set ∅
∅
An event containing zero outcomes — an impossible event. P( ) = 0. Example: rolling a 7 on a standard die.
