Grade 10 Mathematics Study Guide: Functions & GraphsMaster all essential function types—linear, quadratic, hyperbolic, exponential, and trigonometric—with this comprehensive master study guide. Designed specifically for Grade 10 students and teachers, this resource provides thorough explanations, parameter analysis, step-by-step worked examples, and a full mastery assessment bank. Document Overview & StructureThe guide is organized into eight core chapters, followed by a comprehensive practice assessment and quick-reference summary tables:Chapter 1: Foundations of Functions & Relations — Explores the Cartesian plane, quadrant rules, relations versus functions, the vertical line test, functional notation ($f(x)$), domain and range definitions, and axis intercepts. Chapter 2: The Linear Function (Straight Line) — Covers standard equation forms, calculating gradients ($m = frac{y_2 - y_1}{x_2 - x_1}$), interpreting gradient behaviors, y-intercept parameters ($c$), and geometric conditions for parallel ($m_1 = m_2$) and perpendicular ($m_1 times m_2 = -1$) lines. Chapter 3: The Quadratic Function (Parabola) — Analyzes the standard form $y = ax^2 + q$, parameter effects on shape and direction ($a 0$ vs. $a 0$, narrow/wide stretching), turning points, axes of symmetry, and range boundaries. Chapter 4: The Hyperbolic Function (Hyperbola) — Details the standard form $y = frac{a}{x} + q$, branch positioning across quadrants based on $a$, vertical and horizontal asymptotes, and domain/range exclusions. Chapter 5: The Exponential Function — Focuses on the standard form $y = ab^x + q$, exponential growth ($b 1$) versus decay ($0 b 1$), horizontal asymptotes, and range restrictions based on the sign of $a$. Chapter 6: Trigonometric Functions — Explores periodic sine, cosine, and tangent curves, amplitude calculations ($vert{}avert{}$), period intervals ($360^circ$ for sin/cos, $180^circ$ for tan), and the vertical asymptotes unique to the tangent function. Chapter 7: Advanced Analytical Tools — Introduces average gradients for non-linear curves, vertical length calculations between two graphs ($f(x) - g(x)$), and solving for points of intersection by equating functions. Chapter 8: Comprehensive Worked Examples & Mastery Assessment — Walks through exam-style problems with structured solutions and features a complete practice question bank modelled on formal end-of-year assessments. Key Features & HighlightsSystematic Parameter Analysis: Highlights the universal power of parameter $a$ (controlling orientation, scaling, and amplitude across functions) and parameter $q$ (controlling vertical shifts and asymptote positions). Pitfall Prevention: Dedicated warnings highlighting frequent errors, such as forgetting to exclude asymptote values in hyperbola domains/ranges, confusing amplitude signs with reflections, and miscalculating perpendicular gradients (taking the negative reciprocal). Universal Sketching & Exam Checklists: Step-by-step frameworks for approaching unfamiliar questions, sketching curves systematically, and reading equations directly from graphical representations.

, CHAPTER 1

Foundations of Functions & Relations
Before analysing specific function types, it is essential to build a solid understanding of the underlying concepts that
define all of mathematics at this level. This chapter introduces the Cartesian plane, the distinction between a relation and
a function, key notation, and the critical concepts of domain and range.

, The Cartesian Plane
The Cartesian plane is the two-dimensional grid system that provides the foundation for graphing all functions. It is
formed by the intersection of two number lines at right angles to each other: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis.
Their point of intersection is called the origin, located at coordinates (0; 0).

The two axes divide the plane into four distinct regions called quadrants, numbered using Roman numerals in an anti-
clockwise direction starting from the top-right.

Every point on the Cartesian plane is represented as an ordered pair (x; y), where the first value tells you how far to move
horizontally from the origin and the second value tells you how far to move vertically.
