Grade 10 Mathematics: Trigonometry Study GuideMaster the foundations of Grade 10 trigonometry with this comprehensive, meticulously structured study guide. Designed to take students from basic right-angled triangles to advanced graph transformations and no-calculator evaluations, this resource provides everything needed to excel. Document Overview & StructureThe guide is divided into 7 core sections, followed by extensive practice sets, revision exercises, and advanced problem pools: Section 1: Pre-Trig Foundations & Right-Angled Triangles — Master side labelling (Hypotenuse, Opposite, and Adjacent) relative to a reference angle, alongside the Theorem of Pythagoras and Pythagorean triples. Section 2: The Three Primary & Reciprocal Trigonometric Ratios — Learn sine, cosine, and tangent ratios (paired with helpful memory mnemonics), as well as their reciprocals (cosecant, secant, and cotangent). Section 3: Special Angles — Explore exact trigonometric values for $30^{circ}$, $45^{circ}$, and $60^{circ}$ derived from special triangles, eliminating the need for a calculator. Section 4: Extending Trigonometry & The Cartesian Plane — Extend ratios beyond acute angles using coordinates, and apply the CAST rule ("All Students Take Care") to determine signs across all four quadrants. Section 5: Angles of Elevation and Depression — Tackle real-world application problems with a focus on accurate diagram construction. Section 6: Trigonometric Graphs & Transformations — Study the shapes, periods, amplitudes, ranges, asymptotes, and transformations of $y = sin theta$, $y = cos theta$, and $y = tan theta$. Section 7 & Beyond: Practice Sets, Solutions, & Revision — Put concepts to the test with core exercises, step-by-step worked solutions, past-paper style revision questions, and advanced problem sets. Key Features & HighlightsStep-by-Step Problem Frameworks: Clear, repeatable workflows (such as the 4-step Cartesian plane method) to prevent common sign and quadrant errors. No-Calculator Mastery: Deep dives into exact value evaluations using special angle tables and fundamental identities like $sin^2 theta + cos^2 theta = 1$. Comprehensive Error Prevention: A dedicated pitfalls guide highlighting frequent student mistakes, including calculator mode errors (degrees vs. radians), premature rounding, and mislabelling triangle sides. Built-In Practice & Solutions: Includes extensive primary and additional practice exercises complete with thorough, transparent step-by-step solution

Grade 10 Mathematics: Trigonometry
Comprehensive Study Guide

This study guide covers everything you need to master Grade 10 trigonometry — from the foundations of right-angled
triangles and Pythagoras' theorem, through to trigonometric ratios, special angles, the Cartesian plane, graphs, and real-
world applications. Work through each section carefully, use the practice exercises to test your understanding, and refer
back to the theory whenever you need a refresher.

Pre-Trig Foundations & Right-Angled Triangles
Before we dive into trigonometry itself, it is essential to be completely comfortable with the language and structure of
right-angled triangles. Every trigonometric calculation you will ever do in Grade 10 is built on identifying the sides of a
right-angled triangle correctly relative to a chosen reference angle. Get this foundation right, and everything else follows
naturally.

A right-angled triangle has three sides, each with a specific name. The names of two of those sides depend on which angle
you are focusing on — so always start a problem by marking your reference angle clearly before you label any sides.

the hypotenuse.

If you switch your reference angle from one acute angle to the other in the same triangle, the Opposite and
Adjacent sides swap — but the Hypotenuse stays the same.

The Theorem of Pythagoras
Pythagoras' theorem is the single most important result in all of plane geometry. It tells us that in any right-angled
triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is always equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. This gives us the
power to find any missing side as long as we know the other two.

The Core Formula Pythagorean Triples

exactly — no rounding needed! Memorise these and

The Three Primary Trigonometric Ratios
Trigonometry is fundamentally about linking the angles of a right-angled triangle to the ratios of its side lengths. For any
acute angle θ, there are three primary ratios. Every trig problem you encounter will use at least one of these, so you must
know them perfectly.

Sine Cosine Tangent

Opposite y Adjacent x Opposite y
sin θ = = cos θ = = tan θ = =
Hypotenuse Hypotenuse Adjacent

🧠 Mnemonic — Oh Hell Another Hour Of Algebra:
Opposite / Hypotenuse → sin | Adjacent / Hypotenuse → cos | Opposite / Adjacent → tan
