What was the English Reformation?

• In 1533, Henry VII replaced the Pope with himself as Head of Church + set up Church of England
• Church remained catholic during his reign but this move encouraged English Protestants
• After Henry’s death in 1547, Edward VI made far more substancial changes to make the Church of
England truly Protestant.
• After Edward’s death in 1553, Mary I converted England back to Catholicism, but resisted fully
reuniting with Rome (due to lack of her ability to restore land Henry VIII had stripped from English
Catholic Church)
