SPHE324 Week 4 Forum
1) Locate a video that will help you and your classmates understand the "ins and outs" of
Angular Kinetics and or Fluid Mechanics within sport movements. This video must be
specific to this weeks readings.
You may choose any website for a relevant video and be sure to include a link.
For example:
Go to the ESPN home page. Select the search Icon. Search for the term: Sport Science. Select
videos and choose a video to discuss for this week's discussion.
There are over 8 pages of videos, be sure to locate Archived Videos of additional options.
Science360- Youtube is also a great site
2) Explain why and how your chosen video is relevant to the concepts presented in this
week's readings?
Hello class,
I have played multiple sports growing up and one sport that I think fits different
concepts within this week’s reading is track and field. I would like to look more
into a shot-put event within track and field. Shot-put has speed dynamics, optimum
angle & height of release. The throwing technique of either gliding or rational are
also different concepts to consider. The kinetic chain includes push and throw like
movement using change of momentum. There are also different phases to consider
like preparation, execution and follow through when considering fluid mechanics.
With the concept of fluid mechanics, air and gravity are two factors to also
consider. When the ball is moving through the air and the athlete is using their
body to rotate or throw the ball. The shot-put is heavy but when one throws the
shot-put it begins to spin causing drag force and lift force. The magnus effect is
during the spin of the ball. This allows pressure differences to cause relative flow
in velocities. Starting off with a solid and stable base will allow the athlete to
rotate their torso. Their back knee will be bent which will allow the body to travel
in a straight line with the power from the back leg. The force is being applied from
the ground. With using optimal angle, the shot-put is released from the fingertips.
Shoulder movement is constructed, and the athlete’s hands are free to produce
greater momentum that will transfer to the shot put in speed. The speed will
influence the distance with the effects of gravity.
The video shows one performing the movement of shot put and shows what
things can be done to help one be successful.
