cMARKSMANSHIP cTRAINING
Section c Ic. c BASIC c MARKSMANSHIP
2 - 1c. PHASES cOF cTRAINING
Marksmanship c c training c c is c c divided c c into c c two c c phases:
cpreparatory c marksmanship c training c and c range c firing.
Each c c phase c c may c c be c c divided c c into c c separate c c instructional
steps. All c c marksmanship c c training c c must c c be c
c progressive. c Combat c c marksmanship c c techniques c c should c
c be c c practiced c after c the c basics c have c been
c mastered.
2 - 2c. c FUNDAMENTALS
The c main c use c of c the c pistol c or c revolver c is
c to c engage c c an c c enemy c c at c c close c c range c c with c c quick, c
c accurate cf i r e c. Accurate c shooting c results c from c knowing
c and c correctly c applying c the c elements c of
c marksmanship. c T h ce c elements c c of c c combat c c pistol c
c or c c revolver c c marksmanship care:
o Grip.
o Aiming c .
o Breath c c control.
o Trigger squeeze.
o Target c c engagement.
o Positions.
2 - 3c. GRIP
The c weapon c must c become c an c extension c of c the
c hand c and c arm. It c should c replace c the c finger c in
c pointing c at c an c object. A c firm, c uniform
c grip c must c be c applied c to c the c weapon.
A c proper c grip c is c one c of c the c most
cimportant c fundamentals c of c quick c fire.

, a. One-Hand c Grip. Hold c the c weapon c in c the c nonfiring
c hand; form c c a c c V c c with c c the c c thumb c c and c
c forefinger c c of cthe c strong c hand c (firing c hand)
c (see c Figure c 2-1). c Place c the c weapon c in c the c V
c with c the c front c and c rear csights c in c line c with c the
c firing c arm. Wrap c the clower c c three c c fingers c
c around c c the c c pistol c c grip, c putting c equal
c pressure c with c all c three c fingers c to c the rear.
Allow c the c thumb c of c the c firing c hand c to c rest
c alongside c the c weapon c witho ut c pressure. Grip
cthe c c weapon c c tightly c c until c c the c c hand c begins c to
c tremble; relax until the trembling stops. At
c this c point, c the c necessary c pressure c for c a
c proper c grip c has c been c applied. Place c the
c trigger c finger c on c the c trigger c between c the c tip
c and c second c joint c so c that
it c can c be c squeezed c to c the c rear. The c trigger
c finger c must c work c independently c of c the
c remaining c f i n g e r s c.
NOTE: If c any c of c the c three c fingers c on c the
c grip c is c relaxed the c grip c must c be
c reapplied.
b. Two-Hand c Grip. The c two-hand c grip c allows c the
c firer c to c steady c the c firing c hand c and c provide
c maximum c support c during c firing. The c nonfiring
c hand c becomes c a c c support c c mechanism c c for c c the c
c firing c c hand c c by cwrapping c the c fingers c of c the
c nonfiring c hand c around c the c firing c hand.
Two-hand c grips c are c recommended cfor all pistol
and revolver firing.

c the c firing c thumb. (See cFigure c 2-2.)
NOTE: Depending c upon c the individual c firer, c he c may
c choose c to c place c his c index c finger c of c the
c nonfiring c hand c on c the c front c of c the
c trigger c guard c of c the c M9 c pistol c since c this
c weapon c has c a c recurved trigger
guard designed for this c purpose.
(2) Palm-supported c grip. This c grip c is c commonly
c called c the c cup c and c saucer c grip. Grip c the c firing
