Case Study Part 2: Diagnostic Impression

Primary Diagnostic Impression

, ADDICTIONS CASE STUDY: PART 2 - DIAGNOSTIC IMPRESSIONS 2

Client is a 22-year-old female reporting with a number of issues affecting her mental and

physical health. Her primary symptoms are consistent with DSM-5-TR diagnosis of F10.20,

Alcohol Use Disorder, Severe.

Primary Diagnosis- Listing of Criteria Met

Per the diagnostic requirements of the DSM-5-TR the client meets 6 or more symptoms

within a 12-month period:

A great deal of time is spent in activities necessary to obtain alcohol, use alcohol, or

recover from its effects. Marci details how she would start drinking Friday evenings

until 2:00 a.m., then have a few glasses of wine with lunch on Saturdays, followed by six

to seven drinks in the evening. However, over the past two months she has increased her

drinking by up to four glasses of wine each weeknight. Her new pattern has resulted in

her often-needing time to recover in the mornings, which has resulted in her missing

class.

Recurrent alcohol use resulting in failure to fulfill major role obligations at work,

school, or home. Marci is currently unemployed and has been fired or left multiple

places of employment due to the effects of her drinking. Because the narrative states this

took place over a four-year period more specific questioning would be required to ensure

this meets the 12-month criteria for diagnosis. Marci has also had a decline in her

academic performance, has been skipping classes, and has been avoiding contact with her

family.

Important social, occupational, or recreational activities are given up or reduced

because of alcohol use. Recently, Marci has begun drinking at home alone in the

evenings. She has been skipping class, and she has been avoiding contact with her family.
