Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development

Piaget's Theory of Cognitive Development is a developmental theory that
explains how children's thinking, reasoning and understanding of the world
change as they grow. Developed by Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget, the theory
proposes that children are active learners who construct knowledge through
interacting with their environment rather than passively receiving information.
Piaget argued that cognitive development occurs through a sequence of
universal stages, with each stage representing increasingly sophisticated ways of
thinking and understanding. Within social work, Piaget's theory helps
practitioners understand children's developmental abilities, assess their needs
and adapt communication and interventions according to their stage of cognitive
development (Piaget, 1952).

Piaget developed his theory through observing children, including his own,
during the early twentieth century. Rather than viewing children as miniature
adults, he concluded that they think differently from adults and gradually
develop more advanced reasoning abilities over time. Piaget proposed that
cognitive development occurs through the processes of assimilation,
accommodation and equilibration. Assimilation involves incorporating new
experiences into existing knowledge, while accommodation requires modifying
existing knowledge to incorporate new information. Equilibration is the process
through which children balance assimilation and accommodation, enabling
cognitive growth and adaptation (Piaget, 1952).

Piaget identified four stages of cognitive development. The first is the
sensorimotor stage (birth to approximately 2 years), during which infants learn
primarily through physical interaction with their environment using their senses
and movements. During this stage, children develop object permanence, the
understanding that objects continue to exist even when they cannot be seen.

The second stage is the preoperational stage (approximately 2 to 7 years).
Children begin to develop language, imagination and symbolic thinking but
remain egocentric, meaning they find it difficult to understand perspectives
different from their own. Their reasoning is intuitive rather than logical, and they
may struggle to understand concepts such as conservation, where the quantity
of an object remains unchanged despite changes in appearance.
