Radical Social Work

Radical Social Work is a critical approach to social work that argues many of the
problems experienced by individuals, families and communities arise from
structural inequalities rather than personal failings. Influenced by Marxism,
socialism and critical theory, Radical Social Work focuses on challenging
oppression, inequality and the unequal distribution of power within society.
Rather than concentrating solely on helping individuals adapt to difficult
circumstances, the approach seeks to address the political, economic and social
conditions that create disadvantage. Within social work, Radical Social Work
encourages practitioners to combine direct support with advocacy, community
action and social change in pursuit of greater equality and social justice (Bailey &
Brake, 1975).

Radical Social Work emerged during the 1970s in response to concerns that
traditional social work focused too heavily on changing individuals while
neglecting the wider social structures contributing to poverty, discrimination and
exclusion. During this period, economic inequality, unemployment and social
unrest prompted many practitioners to question whether individual casework
alone could effectively address social problems. Influenced by Marxist theories of
class inequality and critical perspectives on power, Radical Social Work argued
that social workers should challenge oppressive systems as well as support
individuals experiencing their effects (Bailey & Brake, 1975).

A central principle of Radical Social Work is that personal difficulties are often

sexism, ableism, inadequate housing and unequal access to education and
healthcare. These problems are viewed not simply as unfortunate circumstances
but as consequences of political and economic systems that privilege some
groups while disadvantaging others. Consequently, practitioners seek to
understand the relationship between personal experiences and wider social
structures when assessing need and planning interventions.

Another key principle is empowerment. Radical Social Work encourages
practitioners to work collaboratively with individuals and communities rather
than adopting an expert role. Service users are viewed as active participants
capable of influencing decisions affecting their lives and contributing to wider
social change. Advocacy, community development and collective action are
