Perfectionism Theory

Perfectionism theory explains how individuals develop exceptionally high
personal standards and strive for flawlessness, often accompanied by overly
critical self-evaluation and concerns about making mistakes. While striving for
excellence can promote motivation and achievement, perfectionism becomes
problematic when individuals believe that anything less than perfection
represents failure or personal inadequacy. Contemporary psychology recognises
perfectionism as a multidimensional construct that can influence mental health,
relationships, education and occupational functioning. Within social work,
understanding perfectionism enables practitioners to recognise how unrealistic
expectations may contribute to anxiety, depression, burnout, eating disorders
and low self-esteem while supporting individuals to develop healthier and more
balanced ways of thinking (Flett & Hewitt, 2022).

Early psychological research viewed perfectionism primarily as a personality
characteristic, but later theorists recognised that it is influenced by cognitive,
emotional, familial and social factors. Paul Hewitt and Gordon Flett developed
one of the most influential models of perfectionism, proposing that it consists of
three interconnected dimensions. Self-oriented perfectionism involves imposing
unrealistically high standards on oneself and engaging in harsh self-criticism
when these standards are not achieved. Other-oriented perfectionism refers to
placing unrealistic expectations on other people, often resulting in frustration or
conflict when they fail to meet these expectations. Socially prescribed
perfectionism occurs when individuals believe that others expect them to be
perfect and that acceptance depends upon flawless performance. Research
suggests that socially prescribed perfectionism is particularly associated with
anxiety, depression and psychological distress (Hewitt & Flett, 1991).

Another influential perspective was proposed by Randy Frost and colleagues,
who argued that perfectionism consists of several dimensions, including
excessive concern over mistakes, doubts about actions, high personal standards,
parental expectations, parental criticism and preference for order and
organisation. Their work highlighted that perfectionism develops through a
combination of personality, upbringing and environmental influences rather than
being a single personality trait (Frost et al., 1990).

Perfectionism theory distinguishes between adaptive and maladaptive
perfectionism. Adaptive perfectionism involves setting ambitious but realistic
