Models of Assessment

Models of assessment are structured frameworks that guide social workers
in gathering, analysing and interpreting information about an individual's
circumstances, strengths, needs and risks. Assessment is a fundamental
component of social work because it informs decision making,
intervention planning and the allocation of appropriate support. Effective
assessment is not simply the collection of information but a collaborative
process that seeks to understand individuals within the context of their
relationships, environment and life experiences. Within social work,
assessment models provide practitioners with systematic approaches that
promote consistency, professional judgement and person-centred practice
while recognising the complexity of human behaviour and social
circumstances (Coulshed & Orme, 2018).

The development of assessment models reflects the evolution of social
work from focusing primarily on individual problems towards adopting
more holistic and strengths-based approaches. Early assessments were
often influenced by medical and diagnostic models, concentrating on
identifying deficits or pathology. Over time, social work increasingly
recognised the importance of understanding individuals within their wider
social, cultural and environmental contexts. Contemporary assessment
therefore integrates biological, psychological, social, cultural and
environmental factors while promoting partnership with service users and
recognising their strengths alongside identified needs (Payne, 2021).

Several assessment models are commonly used within social work. The
person-in-environment model considers how individuals interact with their
family, community, culture and wider social systems. Rather than viewing
problems as residing solely within the individual, practitioners examine
how external factors such as poverty, housing, discrimination and
relationships influence wellbeing. This holistic perspective supports
interventions that address both personal and environmental needs.

The strengths-based assessment model focuses on individuals' abilities,
resources and protective factors rather than concentrating solely on
