Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs is a motivational theory that explains how human
behaviour is influenced by the fulfilment of different levels of needs. Developed
by psychologist Abraham Maslow in 1943, the theory proposes that individuals
are motivated to satisfy a series of needs that range from basic physical survival
to personal growth and fulfilment. Maslow argued that lower-level needs
generally require satisfaction before higher-level psychological needs become
the primary focus. Within social work, the theory provides a useful framework for
understanding how unmet basic needs affect wellbeing, development and an
individual's ability to engage with support and achieve positive outcomes
(Maslow, 1943).

Maslow developed the theory as part of the humanistic approach to psychology,
which emerged during the 1950s as an alternative to behaviourism and
psychoanalysis. Humanistic psychologists emphasised people's strengths, free
will and capacity for personal growth rather than focusing solely on pathology or
unconscious processes. Maslow believed that every individual possesses an
innate drive towards self-actualisation, the process of achieving their full
potential, but recognised that this could only occur when more fundamental
needs had been adequately met (Maslow, 1943).

Maslow originally organised human needs into five hierarchical levels. The first
level consists of physiological needs, including food, water, sleep, warmth and
shelter, which are essential for survival. The second level involves safety needs,
such as physical security, stable housing, financial security and protection from
harm. Once these needs are reasonably satisfied, individuals become
increasingly motivated by love and belonging, which includes supportive
relationships, family connections, friendship and social acceptance. The fourth
level comprises esteem needs, involving self-confidence, achievement,
recognition and respect from others. At the highest level is self-actualisation,
where individuals strive to achieve personal fulfilment, creativity, independence
and the realisation of their potential.

Maslow later expanded his theory by suggesting that some individuals also
pursue self-transcendence, involving concern for the wellbeing of others,
spirituality or contributing to society beyond personal achievement. However,
the original five-stage hierarchy remains the version most commonly applied
within psychology, health and social work.
