Generalist Social Work Practice

Generalist social work practice is a comprehensive approach that equips social
workers to work effectively with individuals, families, groups, organisations and
communities across a wide range of settings and social issues. Rather than
specialising in a single area of practice or relying on one theoretical framework,
generalist practice emphasises flexibility, critical thinking and the integration of
multiple theories, methods and interventions. It enables practitioners to respond
holistically to complex situations by drawing upon evidence-based knowledge,
professional values and skills that are adapted to meet the unique needs of
service users. Within social work, generalist practice forms the foundation of
professional education and prepares practitioners to work across diverse
statutory, voluntary and community settings (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2023).

Generalist social work developed during the twentieth century as the profession
recognised that individuals' needs are often complex and cannot be understood
through a single method of intervention. Earlier social work approaches tended
to focus separately on casework, group work or community work. Over time,
these methods were integrated into a broader framework that enabled
practitioners to work across multiple levels of intervention. This development
reflected increasing recognition that effective social work requires an
understanding of the interactions between individuals, families, communities and
wider social systems rather than focusing on isolated problems (Payne, 2021).

Generalist practice is underpinned by the person-in-environment perspective,
which recognises that people's experiences are influenced by personal, social,
cultural, economic and environmental factors. Consequently, practitioners
undertake holistic assessments that consider strengths, needs, risks,
relationships and structural influences simultaneously. Generalist social workers
also draw upon a wide range of theories, including systems theory, ecological
perspectives, strengths-based practice, attachment theory, crisis intervention
and anti-oppressive practice, selecting approaches that best fit the
circumstances of each individual or family rather than applying a single model
universally.

A central feature of generalist practice is the planned intervention process. This
typically involves engagement, where practitioners establish effective working
relationships; assessment, during which strengths, needs and risks are identified;
planning, involving collaborative goal setting; intervention, where appropriate
