Experiential Learning

Experiential learning is a theory that explains how individuals learn through direct
experience, reflection and the application of knowledge to real-life situations.
Rather than viewing learning as the passive acquisition of information, experiential
learning argues that knowledge is created through the process of experiencing,
reflecting, conceptualising and applying new ideas. The theory emphasises that
meaningful learning occurs when individuals actively engage with experiences,
critically reflect on them and use those reflections to improve future practice. Within
social work, experiential learning is particularly important because professional
competence develops through the integration of academic knowledge, practical
experience and reflective practice (Kolb, 2015).

The foundations of experiential learning can be traced to the work of educational
theorists such as John Dewey, Kurt Lewin and Jean Piaget. Dewey argued that
education should be grounded in experience and that learning occurs most
effectively when individuals actively engage with real-world situations rather than
simply receiving information. Lewin emphasised the importance of reflection and
problem solving, while Piaget highlighted how people construct knowledge through
interactions with their environment. David Kolb built upon these ideas during the
1980s by developing the Experiential Learning Cycle, which remains one of the most
influential models of experiential learning (Kolb, 2015).

Kolb proposed that learning occurs through a continuous four-stage cycle. The first
stage, concrete experience, involves actively participating in an event or activity.
The second stage, reflective observation, requires individuals to think critically about
the experience and consider what happened. The third stage, abstract
conceptualisation, involves linking reflections to existing knowledge, theories or
concepts in order to develop new understanding. Finally, active experimentation
occurs when individuals apply this new knowledge to future situations, testing
different approaches and generating further learning experiences. According to
Kolb, effective learning requires engagement with all four stages rather than relying
on experience alone (Kolb, 2015).

Experiential learning recognises that learning is an ongoing process rather than a
single event. Individuals continuously build upon previous experiences, adapting
their understanding as they encounter new situations. Reflection plays a central role
