Attachment

Bowlby’s (1997) attachment theory emphasises the significance of a child’s
emotional bond with their primary caregivers. These early attachments are
critical for emotional and psychological development, influencing the quality of
future relationships and the individual’s sense of self-worth and social
competence. While children can form attachments to multiple caregivers, bonds
established in early infancy with those who provide consistent and responsive
care are the most enduring. The first two years of life are particularly crucial for
the development of attachment, during which children form an internal working
model, a cognitive framework that shapes their expectations of relationships and
interactions with others. Attachment development progresses through
identifiable stages. Between approximately six weeks and six to eight months,
infants begin to show preference for their primary and secondary caregivers.
From six to eight months up to 18 months to two years, infants demonstrate a
strong attachment to their primary caregivers, often displaying separation
anxiety when the caregiver is absent, even briefly. From around 18 months
onwards, children typically become less dependent on their primary caregiver,
particularly when they have confidence in the caregiver’s availability and
responsiveness during times of need. In secure attachments, caregivers are
sensitive and attuned to the child’s needs, providing predictable, loving, and
consistent care, which supports the child’s emotional and physiological
regulation.

Securely attached children display four key behavioural patterns: proximity
maintenance, the desire to remain close to the caregiver; safe haven, seeking
the caregiver for comfort when distressed; secure base, using the caregiver as a
foundation for exploration; and separation distress, experiencing anxiety in the
caregiver’s absence but being easily comforted upon their return. Responsive
caregiving during these interactions positively impacts neurological,
physiological, and psychosocial development. Children with secure attachments
are more likely to develop strong emotional intelligence, social competence, and
resilience, while those with insecure or disorganised attachments are at higher
risk of behavioural difficulties, poor peer relationships, and mental health
challenges in childhood and adulthood. Several factors can impede the
development of secure attachment, including abuse, neglect, parental mental
health difficulties, substance misuse, multiple care placements, early separation
