Tactical Data Link (TDL) - ANS-Approved, standardized communication links used to
transmit and receive digital information. Most common information is surveillance,
which includes: track position, heading, speed and other amplifying data. TACS
elements primarily use Link 11 and Link 16 to exchange data.
Link architecture - ANS-A characteristic of TDL that describes the overall design of the
communication system forming the multi-tactical network (MTN).
Timing architecture - ANS-A characteristic of TDL that describes the basis on which
rules are developed governing access to link information.
Polling - ANS-A form of timing architecture referred to as roll call- a specific design
whereby net control responsibility are assigned to a single unit. Used in transmitting
Link 11 Data.
Round Robin - ANS-A form of timing architecture that is a variation of the polling
process. Each unit transmits in data in a specific sequence.
Point to point - ANS-A form of timing architecture conducted between two link
participants. Allows a two way exchange of information but is a simplex operation- net
participants are restricted from transmitting while receiving data.
Full Duplex - ANS-A form of timing architecture that allows both units to
simultaneously exchange data. Each computer sends and receives data as it becomes
available without regard to the status of the other unit.
