HIST 405 - HIST 405 Articles vs Constitution The articles of confederation and the only constitution of USA are some how same in many ways and we can assume that the constitution is the extension of the articles which can be considered as the first constitution of United States. The articles were adopted on 1777 and were the combination of 13 states that includes New Hampshire, Massachusetts-bay, Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. By the 1787 a constitution replaced these articles, which is the existing constitution of the United States of America. Factually, articles of confederation were an initiative to safe the unions of states from any foreign control but that was not enough for a newly born united states. The articles emphasized on perpetual union of states to be sovereign but were to stay independent for any other control like British colonies. In these articles states were allowed to collect taxes from the citizens to provide necessities of the state, all the states were engaged with each other to do business and commerce. No state was allowed to do business or alliance with any foreign country without congress assembled. This was an excellent step but after some time the founding fathers realized that it was not enough. The states needed to be protected and unified as a nation, as well as the states having to unify all the citizens as a one nation for that they needed to create a new legislative document, which would be a worthwhile extension or improvement on the Articles. Some of the differences include, the Articles emphasized a unicameral house, which has representation of every state, at least two to seven members, the Federal Government had no right to collect taxes, as well as an Army and Navy to be formed by congress with consent of states. On the other hand the Constitution emphasized a bicameral house in which the senate has a two member representation of all states and House of representative has representation of the states on their population. In the constitution the Federal government had the power to collect taxes and the state would support the Armed forces. Quite literally, both the Articles and the Constitution served for the maintenance of free government, after the pressures and oppression they faced under imperialism of British crown. Although the fundamental difference between the Articles and the Constitution was that, that there was no specification for the new federal government to exercise
