Materials Science Assessment 2 Solved 100%
Correct

Anelasticity - ANS-The property of a solid in which deformation depends on the time
rate of change of stress as well as on the stress itself.

Design Stress - ANS-Product of the calculated stress level and a design factor. Used
to protect against unanticipated failure.

Ductility - ANS-A measure of a materials ability to undergo appreciable plastic
deformation before fracture; it may be expressed as percent elongation or percent
reduction from a tensile test

Elastic Deformation - ANS-Deformation that is nonpermanent, that is, totally
recovered upon release of an applied stress

Elastic Recovery - ANS-Nonpermanent deformation that is recovered or regained
upon the release of a mechanical stress

Engineering Strain - ANS-The chance in gauge length of a specimen in the direction
of an applied stress divided by its original gauge length. (delta/L)

Engineering Stress - ANS-The instantaneous load applied to a specimen divided by
its cross sectional area before any deformation

Hardness - ANS-The measure of a materials resistance to deformation by surface
indentation or by abrasion.

Modulus of Elasticity - ANS-The ratio of stress to strain when deformation is totally
elastic; also a measure of the stiffness of a material.

Plastic Deformation - ANS-Deformation that is permanent or nonrecoverable after
release of the applied load. It is accompanied by permanent atomic displacements.

Poisson's Ratio - ANS-(v = -El/Ea) For elastic deformation, the negative ratio of
lateral and axial strains that result from an applied axial stress.

Proportional Limit - ANS-The point on a stress-strain curve at which the straight
line proportionality between stress and strain ceases.

Resilience - ANS-The capacity of a material to absorb energy when it is elastically
deformed.

Safe Stress - ANS-A stress used for design purposes; for ductile metals, it is the
yield strength divided by a factor of safety
