 Question 1

1.1. Provide an in-depth discussion on how observation and imitation facilitate learning, in
accordance with Bandura’s 1977 Social Learning Theory, supported by scientific literature and
the referenced newspaper article.

1. Introduction
Albert Bandura's Social Learning Theory (1977) provides a comprehensive framework for
understanding how individuals acquire behaviours through observation and imitation, without the
necessity of direct personal experience or trial-and-error learning.¹ This theory is particularly
relevant for explaining the transmission of aggressive and violent behaviours observed in South
African schools, as highlighted in the case study about school violence. The core premise is that
"most human behaviour is learned observationally through modelling: from observing others one
forms an idea of how new behaviours are performed, and on later occasions this coded information
serves as a guide for action."² This theoretical framework directly addresses the phenomenon
described by Dr. Keitumetse Mashego, who explained that "children learn from what they see in
their homes and society."³

2. Observational Learning as a Core Mechanism

2.1 The Bobo Doll Experiment Foundation
Bandura's foundational research, particularly the famous Bobo doll experiment, demonstrated that
children learn aggressive behaviours simply by observing models.⁴ In these studies, children who
observed an adult model behaving aggressively toward an inflatable doll subsequently exhibited
significantly more aggression themselves compared to those who had not been exposed to such
models.⁵ This finding established that learning can occur purely through observation, without
reinforcement delivered either to the model or the observer.⁶ As Dr. Mashego noted, "We are an
anxious, violent, stressed, and wounded nation,"⁷ suggesting that children in South Africa are
exposed to numerous models of aggressive behaviour in their homes and communities, which they
subsequently imitate in school settings.

2.2 Characteristics of Effective Models
Bandura identified that certain models are more likely to be imitated than others.⁸ Individuals are
more likely to model behaviour when the model is perceived as:

 Similar to the observer – Children are more likely to imitate models they perceive as similar to
themselves in age, gender, or background⁹
 High status or powerful – Models who are admired, respected, or hold positions of authority
are more likely to be imitated¹⁰
 Nurturant and rewarding – Models who have provided reinforcement or care in the past are
more likely to be imitated¹¹
 Visible and accessible – The more frequently one is exposed to a model, the greater the
likelihood of imitation¹²
