Document your answers directly on this activity document as you complete the activity. When you are finished, you will save this activity document to your device and upload this activity document with your answers to your Learning Management System (LMS). The activity A graduate student is completing a public health study assessing the local causes of death and how they compare to national rates. You’ve been tasked with gathering the data she needs from the regional healthcare system. In this activity, you’ll be running various queries on the data to answer questions posed by the student. Access the EHR queries tool and corresponding dataset under 2: Launch EHR. Click the New Session button to launch the EHR. Follow the instructions to generate queries to answer the questions in the next section. On the Queries tab, select New to initiate a new query. Name the query ‘Local Mortality Analysis’. First, you’ll be determining the local rates of death for the top 10 causes: Alzheimer’s disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory disease (CLRD), diabetes, diseases of the heart, influenza and pneumonia, kidney disease, stroke, suicide, and unintentional injuries. There are 21,689 total local recorded deaths in the database. Run a query to determine the number of deaths for each cause. The query for Alzheimer’s disease is shown below. Select Query to generate the total records. Then repeat for the remaining 9 causes. Query Rules: ‘Cause of Death’ equal ‘Alzheimer’s disease’ To determine the mortality rate for each cause, use a calculator or other resource to divide the total records for each cause by the total number of deaths recorded (21,689). Multiply your answer by 100 to convert to a percentage and round to the nearest tenth (ex. 34.1%). Answer questions 1-11 in the next section. Next, refer to the resource, “CDC Leading Causes of Death-United States 2018”. This resource is found under Step 1: Overview & Resources. Based on the data in the first table causes of death in 2018 for all persons, answer question 12 in the next section. Using Microsoft Excel® or other resource, prepare a data table that compares the local mortality rates for the 10 causes to the national rates from 2018. Enter the table as your answer for question 13. Note: Observe the data in your table. Of the 10 causes, which local rate is more than 3 times higher than the national rate? Hint: Divide each local mortality rate by the national rate. For example, the mortality rate for diseases of the heart locally is 1.2 times the national rate (28.1/23.1=1.2). Answer question 14. The researcher is curious if the local mortality rates for diseases of the heart for each gender are consistent with the national rates. First, run a query to determine the total number of deaths recorded for men. Query Rules: ‘Gender’ equal ‘Male’ Then, determine the number of deaths for diseases of the heart that occurred in men. Query Rules: ‘Gender’ equal ‘Male’ AND (Add rule) ‘Cause of Death’ equal ‘Diseases of Heart’ Divide the total number of records from this query by total number of deaths that occurred in men. Answer question 15. Compare the local mortality rate for diseases of the heart in men to the national rate for 2018. Answer question 16. Repeat these queries to assess the local mortality rate for diseases of the heart in females and compare to the national rate for 2018. Answer questions 17 and 18. Finally, run queries to assess local causes of death and age. The researcher is particularly interested in deaths in persons age 25 or less. Determine the total number of deaths for this age group.
