Bio111 Chapter 6 notes
Chapter 6 of BIO 111: Cellular Respiration explains how cells convert the energy stored in glucose into ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the cell’s main energy source. Cellular respiration occurs mainly in the mitochondria and has four main stages: glycolysis (breaks glucose into pyruvate in the cytoplasm), pyruvate oxidation (converts pyruvate to acetyl-CoA), the citric acid (Krebs) cycle (produces electron carriers NADH and FADH₂), and the electron transport chain/chemiosmosis, where most ATP is made using oxygen as the final electron acceptor. The chapter also compares aerobic respiration, which requires oxygen and produces about 30–32 ATP per glucose, with fermentation, an anaerobic process that regenerates NAD⁺ and produces only 2 ATP when oxygen is unavailable.
