Masterclass Notes: Indian Taxation System SimplifiedA Comprehensive Guide for
Students, Aspirants & Educators Introduction:
Why Taxes Matter?Tax is the primary source of revenue for any government. Without
taxes, a nation cannot fund essential public services like healthcare, education,
infrastructure, and national security. As the ancient economist Chanakya wisely noted:
"The government should collect taxes from citizens just like a bee sucks honey from a
flower--without harming its petals."
1. Classification of TaxesThe Indian taxation structure is broadly divided into two
major categories:A) Direct Tax -
"Borne by the person on whom it is levied"Definition: This tax is imposed directly on
the income or wealth of an individual or a corporate entity. The burden of this tax
cannot be shifted to anyone else.Key Examples:Income Tax: Levied on the personal
earnings of individuals.Corporate Tax: Levied on the net profits of registered
DRAFT
companies.Nature: It is Progressive in nature. This means higher-income earners pay
a higher percentage of tax compared to lower-income earners.B) Indirect Tax - "Passed
on to the consumer"Definition: This tax is levied on the manufacture, sale, or
consumption of goods and services. The ultimate burden of this tax falls on the final
consumer.Key Examples: GST (Goods and Services Tax), Customs Duty.Nature: It is
Regressive in nature. Everyone pays the exact same tax amount on a product (e.g., a
packet of biscuits), regardless of their wealth or income.
2. The Game Changer:
GST (Goods and Services Tax)Implemented on July 1, 2017, GST replaced a cascade
of complex, multiple indirect taxes (like VAT,Service Tax, and Excise Duty) with a
unified concept of "One Nation, One Tax."The Three Components of GST:CGST
(Central GST): Collected by the Central Government on intra-state supply of goods
and services.SGST (State GST): Collected by the State Government on intra-state
supply of goods and services.IGST (Integrated GST): Collected by the Central
Government on inter-state trade and commerce (between two different states).
