Introduction

Schooling is not a neutral technical process of transmitting knowledge. It is a social institu-
tion embedded in wider structures of class, culture and power, one that can be read simul-
taneously as a mechanism of social continuity and as a site where inequality is produced
and re-produced. Structural approaches, most notably the Marxist and Bourdieusian ac-
counts of social reproduction, treat schools as institutions that convert existing social and
economic advantage into what looks like fairly earned success, so that class inequality is re-
produced across generations and made to appear legitimate rather than imposed (Bourdieu
and Passeron, 1977; Bowles and Gintis, 1976). Yet learners are not passive vessels for this
process. Paul Willis’s (1977) study of working-class “lads” showed that pupils actively resist
the school’s authority and its promised link between qualifications and reward, even though
that resistance can, ironically, help reproduce the very class position it opposes. Alongside
these structural and cultural-conflict perspectives stands interpretivism, a tradition concerned
less with the school as an instrument of the wider economy and more with the meanings,
intentions and “rules of the game” that teachers and learners construct together in the class-
room (Woods, 1983; Blumer, 1969). Interpretivists argue that observed behaviour in a school
cannot be understood correctly unless the researcher also grasps the subjective meaning
actors attach to it.

This essay holds these perspectives together rather than treating them as rival descriptions
of separate phenomena. Social reproduction explains why schooling tends, in aggregate,
to reproduce class advantage; resistance theory explains why that reproduction is neither
automatic nor uncontested; and interpretivism supplies the vocabulary for understanding
how reproduction and resistance are actually lived out inside classrooms. Structure alone
risks a deterministic account with no learner agency; meaning alone risks losing sight of
the patterns that structure those meanings in the first place. The discussion moves from the
macro-sociological explanation of how schools reproduce and legitimate inequality, through
the case of Willis’s lads and the contradiction in their resistance, to the interpretivist account
of meaning-making that explains how reproduction and resistance are constructed in every-
day classroom interaction.
