2. What is location? 'Where' a place is (the coordinates on a map)




3. What is locale? Each place is made up of a series of locales where everyday life activities take place.
eg: an office / home /park/church. These locales dictate our social interactions
and help forge attitudes, values and behaviours. We naturally behave differently
in these places. A place is shaped by the people, cultures and customs




4. What is sense of The subjective and emotional attachment people have to a place. This may be
place? completely different to another individual within the same area.

- Reaching the peak of Snowdon is a memorable event (spectacular views). Many
people feel this is a special place.




6. What is Place- If some places are special, others suffer from placelessness. Idea that a particular
lessness? landscape (eg: airport terminal) could be anywhere because it lacks uniqueness.
Geographers propose that this occurs when global forces have a greater influence
on shaping a place than local factors. eg: McDonald's/British High Streets

- Even sites where large numbers of people were killed like Ground Zero are
marketed and managed by tourism professionals. They choose what visitors are
allowed to access - they mediate our experience of the place.
- Tourist sites have a different meaning and importance for each visitor
- Each visitor's senses will be attuned differently and see a location through the
'spectacles' of their prior experiences.
- Religious beliefs / ethnicity /sexuality will influence how a tourist perceives a
place. Differing perceptions of a place can lead to conflict.

location/society may make such 'wrongdoers' feel out of place.
-Excluded groups may include: ethnic minorities/ or ppl who are local nationals
(born + raised in a place but feel excluded from it)
